THE NIGHT OF THE MOOSE -HALIFAX Days 5-6

So, I have never met a moose up close and personal. Although we did see a mama and her two babies in Jasper a few years ago as they ambled across the road but they were gone before we could  even get a photo. They can grow very big - up to 9 feet and 1000 or more pounds.

Big as they are, they are no match for a train barreling down the track. We wondered why the train had stopped, wondering if we were just side lined during the night. Imagine our surprise when we learned the next morning that the train had hit a moose on the tracks. None of us saw the moose but we felt the effects of the hit!

Besides our significant delay on the track, a cable which controlled the toilets had been damaged. There is no benefit to having your own toilet if you cannot flush said toilet. Our whole car had that issue and before long a new car was opened up for our use. These were ‘comfort seats’ which are actually  pretty comfortable.

As expected we had breakfast and lunch in the dining car. When we were not marveling at the beautiful countryside we spent our hours in goods seats reading, listening to books, or napping. And it is beautiful!!! Looking out at the fields and forests was amazing. At one point there was a significant stop as a new engineer had to be brought on board. And the another wait at Moncton where a huge order of boxed St. Hubert chicken was delivered to the train for our unplanned

It seemed to take forever to arrive in Halifax. We had planned a walk along the boardwalk with an early dinner. Instead we found ourselves waiting for a taxi outside the train station just after 2:00 AM. It was about 3:00 AM before we got to bed. Our 21 hour train ride had become 29 hours, [The good news is that we have been promised a 25% refund of our train fare which we are still waiting to see.]

Our only plan for the next day was to take the bus to the airport and pick up our rental car so it was pretty laid back and we could sleep in. We almost missed breakfast because we did sleep later.

The car is a very nice white Chrysler 300S, almost brand new with low mileage, very spacious with nice lumbar support. When I reserved it last July I was given a charge of $1044 CAD. I asked what it would have cost now and was told over $4000 CAD. So grateful to have reserved early and with Costco because the second driver is included at no extra charge. We stopped by a Canadian Tire to buy a food cooler for our travels and then over to the grocery store to buy a few things.

The Halifax Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lies between the airport and our hotel. We stopped so I could see it. It is small and lovely but I did not expect the strong feeling of the Spirit I felt as I walked up to the temple. The Spirit is always comforting but this time it was overwhelming. I found myself crying and even sobbing. Since I have not really been able to cry since Steve died this was amazing. It was healing.

Still tired from our moose adventure we then took a nap and barely woke up in time to walk to find some dinner at the boardwalk. We will be back in Halifax at the end of our adventure so we

will see more then.

This sculpture on the boardwalk was remarkable. It was made of wires and constructed in such a way that the sailboat was visible.
